SJC Golfers Finish Fifth at UMF Invitational

NEWRY, ME – The Saint Joseph's golf team placed fifth with a 347 score in the 2012 UMaine-Farmington Invitational at Sunday River Golf Club on Thursday. Freshman Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) paced the Monks with an 83 (42-41) card and finished in a tie for 10th overall.

With the help of Josh Hogan, who carded a 76 (39-37) and finished in a three-way tie for Medalist honors, University of Southern Maine earned top team accolades with a 319 score, six strokes ahead of runner-up University of New England.

In third place was Husson University which, with a 326 team card, saw its streak of 11 consecutive UMF Invitational victories come to an end on this day. The Eagles were led by William Hutchins, who shot a 76 (34-42) and sat atop the individual leaderboard with Hogan and Beavers linker Orion Cochrane (37-39).

Maine-Farmington (332), Saint Joseph's (347), Maine-Presque Isle (350), Maine Maritime (358) and Bates (373) rounded out the field of competing institutions.

For St. Joe's, junior Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) carded an 87 (44-43), senior Jake Brown (Lewiston, Maine) shot an 88 (43-45), junior Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.) checked in with an 89 (47-42), and senior Nick Zwald (Campton, N.H.) posted a 113 (58-55) on the notoriously-difficult course.

Saint Joseph's returns to the greens on Tuesday when the team hosts the 10th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament at the Point Sebago Golf Resort in Casco. Tee time is scheduled for 11:00 AM.

The tournament is hosted by St. Joe's on an annual basis in memory of John Queenan, a 2003 graduate of Bow High School who died tragically in an automobile accident just prior to the beginning of his freshman year at Saint Joseph's.
