GORHAM, ME – The Saint Joseph's College golf team placed fourth with a 241 team card in the modified-format Southern Maine Cup at the Gorham Country Club on Friday afternoon.
University of Southern Maine, the tournament-host, claimed top-team honors with a 211 card. University of New England finished as the runner-up after shooting a collective 271 in the event, which was played through heavy rain at times during the day. Maine-Farmington placed third with a 224 score.
Each team broke up into two-man pairings for the day, playing six holes in the format of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of alternate shot.
The Monks were led by the pairing of Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) and Jake Brown (Lewiston, Maine), who worked together to post a 73 (37-36) card, which was good for fourth overall. Sean Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) and Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) combined to place 11th with a 78 (39-39) and Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.) and David Kapelson (Litchfield, N.H.) shot a 90 to finish 12th in the annual event.
The Southern Maine pairings of Aaron Bailey/Caleb Jones and Josh Hogan/Sean Bergeron both shot 69's to split the medalist honor. UNE's Tyler Moody and Troy Eaton placed third with a 70 card.
Saint Joseph's will participate in the UNE Invitational at Cape Arundel Golf Club on Monday. Opening tee-time is set for 10:00 AM.
