Monks Place Seventh in Maine Intercollegiate Championship

BANGOR, ME – The Saint Joseph's College golf team placed seventh with a two-day 658 card in the 2013 Maine Intercollegiate Championship over the weekend. Freshman Mike Caron (Gorham, Maine) paced the Monks and finished in a tie for 12th with a 157 (77-80) card.

Husson University claimed top team honors for the 10th time in the last 15 years as the Eagles' top four finishes all placed in the top six overall, including medalist Porter Gervais, who shot a 143 (69-74), seven strokes ahead of runner-up Geoff Sullivan of Colby College.

Southern Maine, the 2013 Maine Intercollegiate champion, cut 19 strokes off the opening day score with a 299 on day two and placed second with a 617 card. Maine-Presque (636), Bowdoin College (638) and Bates College (648) wrapped up the top five competing programs.

Colby College (653), Saint Joseph's (658), University of New England (662), Maine Maritime (663), Maine-Farmington (667) and Maine-Augusta (697) also participated in the annual state title tourney.

For the Monks, senior Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) shot a 161 (82-79) and finished in a tie for 19th, sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) was 24th (162, 79-83) and senior Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.) tied for 49th (179, 94-85). Freshman John Marcous (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) also played over the weekend and turned in a 181 (93-88) card to place 51st.

Saint Joseph's will hit the links next Saturday and Sunday when the team participates in the Husson University Invitational at the Penobscot Valley Country Club.
