Monks Finish Third in Southern Maine Scramble

GORHAM, ME – The Saint Joseph's College golf team placed third with a 226 team card in the modified-format Southern Maine Cup at the Gorham Country Club on Friday afternoon.

Tournament-host University of Southern Maine claimed top-team honors for the sixth-consecutive year with a 205 collective card, the lowest program score since the event took on its current scoring format in 2007.

Rounding out the four-team field, University of New England finished as the runner-up (217), Saint Joseph's placed third (226) and University of Maine-Farmington was fourth (231). Each team broke up into two-man pairings for the day, playing six holes in the format of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of alternate shot.

The Monks were led by the pairing of senior Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) and sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.), as the duo combined to register an even par 71 card. Senior Jake Brown (Lewiston, Maine) – making his 2013 debut – and freshman Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) carded a one-over 72 while freshman Andrew Berg (Fryeburg, Maine) and senior Connor Rague (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) worked together to record an 82 score.

The Southern Maine pairing of Brady Myers and Tom Murray captured medalist honors with a four-under 67 and Huskies linkers Caleb Jones and AJ Simokaitis posted a collective 68 card to finish as the runner-up.

Saint Joseph's will participate in the UNE Invitational at Cape Arundel Golf Club on Tuesday.
