WATERVILLE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College finished as the runner-up with a 316 team card in the Thomas College Golf Classic at Waterville Country Club on Sunday.
Sophomore Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) made history by recording his second medalist honor of the season and fourth of his career, the most by a Saint Joseph's golfer over the last 15 years. For Caron, who double-bogeyed the first hole and made up for the uncharacteristic hiccup by tallying four birdies during the remainder of the day, the 71 card counts as the lowest 18-hole score of his NCAA career.
The card is also the program's best since Matt Cotreau '10 and Chris Deroche '08 finished as the top two players, with 69 and 71 cards, in the UNE Invitational on September 27th, 2007.
Junior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) also fared well with a 78 card, freshman Matt Galvin (Derry, N.H.) shot an 83 in what was his inaugural NCAA tournament, junior Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) carded an 84, and senior David Kapelson (Litchfield, N.H.) rounded out the SJC quintet with an 87.
Maine-Presque Isle won the event with a 308 team score while Maine-Farmington (324) and Colby College (330) placed third and fourth, respectively. Thomas did not field a full complement of players and, as a result, did not score.
Saint Joseph's returns to the links on Tuesday when the Monks host the 12th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament at Point Sebago Golf Resort in Casco. Tee-times begin at 11:00 AM.
