Monks in Eighth after Day One of GNAC Golf Championship

CANTON, Mass. – Following Day One action at the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Golf Championship at the Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton, Mass., three-time defending league champ Rhode Island College sits atop the standings with a score of 292.

RIC owns a nine-stroke lead over Johnson & Wales, which shot a collective 301 on Saturday.

RIC junior Jonathan Cooper carded a 70 on Saturday afternoon, finishing first among the 40 student-athletes participating with 18 holes left to play on Sunday. The first group will tee off at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is third after the first day of competition with a 304, just one stroke ahead of fourth-place University of Southern Maine (305). Host Suffolk University is fifth with a 309, followed by Emmanuel College and Worcester State College tied with matching 317's and Saint Joseph's College of Maine with a 327.

UMass Dartmouth freshman Tyler Hemingway, UMass Dartmouth sophomore Michael Byron and RIC junior Ryan Butler finished Saturday in a three-way tie for second place at 72, while Southern Maine sophomore Spencer Plante carded a 73 for fifth place.

For the Monks, junior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) shot a 78, sophomore Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) carded an 81, freshman Matt Galvin (Derry, N.H.) posted an 82, freshman Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) notched an 86, and junior Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) tallied an 88.
