Golfers Take Southern Maine Cup

GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) and junior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) combined to shoot a three-under par 68 (33-35) to lead Saint Joseph's College to a first place finish at the 2015 Southern Maine Cup held at the par-71 Gorham Country Club Friday afternoon.

A unique event, the Southern Maine cup features a Ryder Cup format with pairs of golfers playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble format and finally six holes of alternate shot golf.

For the Monks, the unprecedented success continues, as Saint Joseph's has now won four-consecutive tournaments, a streak that began with the program's second Maine State Championship on September 20th.

With Letourneau and Caron leading the way, the Monks combined for a team score of 219 to edge second place finisher University of New England (221).  The Monks' win snaps the Huskies' four-year win streak at their annually hosted event and counts as the SJC lowest card since the tournament adopted an 18-hole format in 2007.

The Southern Maine Cup victory is the Monks' first since 2006 and fourth since 2002 overall. Prior to this afternoon, St. Joe's had not finished higher in the Cup since placing second in 2007. The Royal Blue placed third with 233 strokes last fall.

For Saint Joseph's, senior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) and freshman Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) combined for a 75 (35-40) card and the duo of sophomore Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) posted a collective 76 (35-41) score.

Southern Maine placed third with a 225 score and University of Maine-Farmington was fourth with a 240 card.

Saint Joseph's returns to the course next Friday with an appearance in the 18-hole University of New England Invitational. The event, hosted at Cape Arundel Golf Club, is scheduled for a 10:00 AM tee time.
