CASCO, Maine – Saint Joseph's College registered a 302 team score to win the 14th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament at Point Sebago Golf Resort on Tuesday. Sophomore Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) led the Monks with an even-par 72 en route to claiming Medalist honors, just one stroke ahead of his senior teammate, Mike Caron (Gorham, Maine), who was vying for his third Queenan title.
Today's top finish in the Monks' annually hosted event is the program's first since the tournament was named in honor of John Queenan prior to the 2003 competition.
Along with the scores of Letourneau and Caron, the Monks received a 76 from sophomore Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus), an 81 from junior Brandon Lebrecque (Gorham, Maine), and an 82 card from sophomore Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine).
University of Southern Maine was denied a third-consecutive Queenan crown and finished as the runner-up with a 313 card while University of Maine-Farmington posted an aggregate 322 score and placed third. University of New England (327) and Thomas College (384) rounded out the group of competing institutions in the 2016 event.
Southern Maine senior Alex Carroll (Searsport, Maine) finished third with a 75, Batchelder was fourth (76), Maine-Farmington sophomore Eric Aguiar (Thornton, N.H.) was fifth with a 77, and USM senior Joseph Francoeur (Windham, Maine) placed sixth individually with a 78 card.
Sophomore Jackson Tucker (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the Nor'easters with a 79 score and senior Cam Jackman (Saco, Maine) was the leading scorer for Thomas with an 89.
Saint Joseph's also fielded a quintet of individual players in this year's tournament, with senior Dylan Cox (Oxford, Maine) leading the pack with a 79 score. Freshmen Tyler Johnson (Windham, Maine) (91), Brendan Donovan (Auburn, Maine) (85), Cameron Robinson (Hollis Center, Maine) (97), and Sean Peschier (Watertown, Mass.) (91) rounded out the group of SJC individuals.
The yearly tournament is named in memory of John Queenan, a 2003 graduate of Bow High School who died tragically in an automobile accident just prior to the beginning of his freshman year as a student-athlete at Saint Joseph's.
NOTEWORTHY:
The Monks' 302 card is the best posted by an SJC team in the history of the tournament and the top score since Husson University won the 2011 event with a 296 score…Letourneau, who now has three Medalist honors to his credit in just over one season, paced the Monks with a 76 in the 2015 event…three SJC players posted sub-80 cards in the Queenan tourney for the first time since 2007, when Chris DeRoche '08, Francois Renaud '08, and Matt Cotreau '10 shot 73, 75, and 79, respectively.
