LEEDS, Maine – Saint Joseph's College placed three golfers in the top six individually en route to claiming the 2016 Maine Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship at Springbrook Golf Club on Sunday.
Sitting in second and four strokes behind Husson University through 18 holes on Saturday, the Monks shaved 10 strokes off their day-one score en route to claiming their second-consecutive Maine State Championship and third state title in program history.
Senior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) paced the Monks – and tied a career best - with a two-over par 144 (72-72) card, good for second overall, but the story of the day was the play of sophomores Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) and Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine), as the duo combined to cut 10 strokes from their opening 18 efforts. Both players posted solid 77 cards on Saturday, but Letourneau turned in a personal-best 71 on the closing 18 while Hachey shot a 73 as the second-year standouts finished fifth (148) and sixth (150), respectfully.
Sophomore Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) capped the Monks' scorers with a 162 (81-81) while junior Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) shot a 164 (81-83).
Husson University shot a collective 303 on both days, but it would not be enough as the Eagles finished as the runner-up for the second-consecutive season with a 606 (303-303) card. Southern Maine finished third (617), University of New England was fourth (620), and Bowdoin College (627) rounded out the top five competing programs.
Bates College (631), Colby College (634), Maine-Farmington (638), Maine Maritime (652), and Thomas College (DNF) also participated in this year's State Championship.
Husson sophomore Daulton Wickenden shot a five-under 136 (67-69) to claim Medalist honors for the second-consecutive season. Husson's Taylor Morang finished third with a 145 and Southern Maine standout Tom Murray placed fourth with a 147 score.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Thursday when the Monks compete in the UNE Invitational at Cape Arundel Country Club. Tee time is slated for 10:00 AM.
