Coach Smyth returns for his 14th season as head coach of the Monks golf team.

2016-17: The 2016-17 campaign will be remembered as the most successful season in SJC Golf history to date, as the Royal Blue won nine tournaments, including the Maine State Championship and the program's first-ever conference title, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship, during the fall and spring seasons combined. With the GNAC crown, the Monks earned an automatic qualifier into the NCAA DIII Championship Tournament for the first time in team history. The Monks also trekked to Florida and Georgia during the program's inaugural Spring Break trip in early March.

The Monks placed 41st in the NCAA Tournament, held at beautiful Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, with a 664 team card.

Along with GNAC and Maine State titles, Saint Joseph's also recorded wins at the John Queenan Memorial, Maine-Farmington Invitational, UNE Invitational, and Thomas Golf Classic as well as head-to-head victories over Husson University and University of New England in the spring.

Head Coach Jamie Smyth '92 has been chosen as the GNAC Coach of the Year – by vote of his peers – while senior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) and sophomores Adam Hachey(Winthrop, Maine) and Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) collected All-Conference honors by virtue of their top-five finishes in the GNAC Championship, hosted by Southern Maine at the Gorham Country Club on October 15th and 16th.

In addition, the Monks garnered GNAC Sportsmanship Team honors, an award also voted on by conference head coaches.

Also, Caron was chosen as the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Guy Tedesco Award recipient at the 82nd Annual NEIGA Championship Awards Banquet on in late October. The prestigious award is presented each year to the Outstanding New England college golfer who has made a significant contribution to college golf in the areas of active participation, exemplary behavior, promotion of the game, leadership and cooperation with others, and sportsmanship.

2015-16: Smyth guided the 2015 squad to one of the finest seasons in program history, as the Monks set season records for tournament victories (8), 18-hole average (314.2), best round (295), best 36 (600), top 10 individual finishes (33), and top 20 individual finishes (51).

The highlight of the 2015 campaign came on the weekend of September 19th, when Saint Joseph’s carded a 607 at the Fairlawn Country Club to claim the program’s second Maine State Championship (first since 2004). Freshman Cameron Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) shot a three-over 147 (72-75) to pace the Monks and finish second overall individually while fellow first-year Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) notched a 150 (73-77) card and placed fourth overall. Junior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) posted a 156 (79-77), freshman Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) contributed a 158 (80-78) score, and captain Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) shot a 159 (76-83), marking the first time in program history that all five of the Monks' golfers scored less than 160 in the same 36-hole event.

The Monks also posted UMF Invitational, Thomas College Invitational, Husson Invitational, Southern Maine Cup, UNE Invitational, and USM Fall Classic victories with fifth-place finishes in the GNAC Championship and NEIGA Championship events.

Three individuals combined to collect 12 accolades, including Caron, who garnered NEIGA All-New England acclaim for the third-consecutive season, and Letourneau, who earned five GNAC Rookie of the Week honors and was selected as the September ECAC DIII Co-Golfer of the Month. Hachey also collected GNAC Rookie of the Week mention on October 26th.

PREVIOUSLY:

As a college golfer, Smyth was a member of the first and only Saint Joseph's golf team to qualify for the NAIA National Golf Championship in 1991. In addition, he played on four consecutive New England Championship baseball teams at Saint Joseph's College.

Smyth earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from St. Joe's in 1992 and, during his senior year, spent his fall semester performing an internship at the White House in Washington D.C.

In addition to his coaching duties, Smyth is currently a full-time employee of the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier and has served as the head softball coach at Saint Joseph's since the 1998 campaign.

A native of Gorham, Maine, Coach Smyth currently resides in Windham with his wife, Susan, daughters Hannah and Sarah, and son Ryan.
