Wildcats Race Past Monks, 93-51

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (10-1, 4-0 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-8, 0-4 GNAC), 93-51, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball action on Tuesday night.

THE LEAD

A sluggish start hamstrung the Monks, as the visitors committed 14 turnovers while making just four field goals off a 22.2% (4-18) shooting effort in the opening frame. Saint Joseph's did not hit double digits on the board until junior Andrew Ruffen (Salem, N.H.) netted a pair of free throws with 3:44 before the break.

In the meantime the Wildcats, who run their winning streak to 10 games with tonight's triumph, shot 60% (18-30) from the floor and 50% (8-16) from downtown en route to taking a 47-16 lead into intermission. Johnson & Wales scored 20 points off the Monks' 14 miscues in the first half and 40 points off 26 turnovers overall.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S

  • Sophomore forward Quinn Richardson-Newton (Saco, Maine) led the Monks with 14 points and nine rebounds and was 8-8 from the FT line
  • Senior guard Jake Downing (Simsbury, Conn.) was 4-5 from three-point land with 12 points
  • Ruffen added seven points and five boards

LEADERS – JOHNSON & WALES

  • Tom Garrick netted a game-high 22 points with three rebounds and four assists
  • Quarry Greenaway tallied 12 points, five boards and four assists
  • Clayton Roker added 12 points
  • Anthony Jernigan contributed seven points, nine assists and six steals

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's shot 35.9% (14-39) overall, 40% (6-15) from three-point distance and 85% (17-20) from the free throw line. Johnson & Wales countered by shooting 59.6% (34-57) from the floor, 52% (13-25) from downtown and 85.7% (12-14) from the line on the evening.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 9-9 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales University, a team that has now defeated the Monks in four-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2013-14 campaign.
