CASTINE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to defeat Maine Maritime Academy (0-1), 82-75, in the 2017-18 season-opener on Wednesday night.

FIRST GLANCE:

Junior guard Ian Mileikis (Auburn, Maine) scored a career-high 27 points off an 11-13 shooting performance and the Monks held an 18-point advantage (48-30) in points in the paint to open the season in the win column.

THE REST OF THE STORY:

In a game featuring seven tie scores and 10 lead changes, Saint Joseph's managed to claim the lead for good with the help of a 9-2 run, which saw the visitors stake a 66-56 cushion midway through the second half.

The Mariners managed to cut their deficit down to one point (71-70) with 3:10 remaining, but the Monks countered with seven unanswered points and went 5-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to claim the seven-point victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Mileikis added six rebounds, six assists, and four steals to his impressive stat line
  • Junior guard Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) scored 20 points with six boards and a pair of assists
  • Senior forward Aaron Hall (Haverhill, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points, three caroms, and a pair of blocked shots
  • Senior forward Quinn Richardson-Newton (Saco, Maine) added eight points and three rebounds

LEADERS – MAINE MARITIME:

  • Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists
  • Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) was 5-9 from downtown with 15 points
  • Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) was 6-6 from the FT line and contributed 15 points

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's posted advantages in rebounds (35-25), points off turnovers (24-13), points in the paint (48-30), and bench points (12-9) in the victory. Both teams recorded 23 assists.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the triumph, Saint Joseph's remains undefeated (23-0) in the history of the series with Maine Maritime Academy. The Monks are now 29-18 all-time in season-opening games.
