STANDISH, Maine – The Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association (MMBCWA) weekly honors have been released and Saint Joseph's College freshman guard Jack Casale (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) has been selected as the MMBCWA Rookie of the Week.
Casale averaged 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, while shooting 45.2 percent from the field as the Monks went 2-1 on the week. Casale scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 76-70 win at Mount Ida on Tuesday. Casale then recorded a near double-double as he scored 18 points and had nine rebounds at Johnson & Wales as the Monks fell 64-63. Casale finished the week helping lead Saint Joseph's to a 67-56 win over Emmanuel scoring 11 points.
Through 22 games for the 14-8 Monks, Casale is averaging 12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists while shooting 40.6% (91-224) from the field, 36.1% (48-133) from three-point distance, and 76.7% (33-43) from the free throw line. He currently leads the team in rebounds (121), ranks second in three-pointers made (48) and blocked shots (9), and third in scoring and free throws made (33).
The MMBCWA weekly honor is a career-first for the three-time Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week honoree.
In the MMBCWA Weekly Coaches Poll, Saint Joseph's is fourth with 16 points. Bowdoin College (14-7) received all seven first-place votes and is ranked first, Husson University (16-5) is second, Bates College (11-12) is third, and Colby College (10-12) is fifth.
Saint Joseph's will play at Albertus Magnus College on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
