Saint Joseph's Claims Second Consecutive NABC Team Excellence Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) this week announced the seventh annual Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics, and Saint Joseph's College is one of 150 teams from around the nation to earn the honor.

These awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2018-19 season. To earn an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA (all three divisions), NAIA and NJCAA must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed during the 2018-19 season. Saint Joseph's garnered the high academic honor last year as well.

Saint Joseph's is one of two teams from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) to earn the academic accolade as Suffolk University joins the Monks on the distinguished list.

Also, St. Joe's is one of just three Maine institutions – along with Bates College and Maine Maritime Academy - to claim honors this summer.

Led by 16th-year Head Coach Rob Sanicola '99, Saint Joseph's posted a 19-8 overall record – including a 7-4 mark in conference play – en route to earning the #6 seed in the GNAC Tournament this season. The Monks upset #3 Johnson & Wales 83-80 in a conference quarterfinal on February 19th but suffered a season-ending 91-86 semifinal setback at the hands of seventh-seeded University of Saint Joseph two days later.

About the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)

Located in Kansas City, Missouri, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches.
