Monks Blank Eagles in Opener, 1-0

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) kicked off the 2017 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Husson University (0-1) in non-conference men's soccer play on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Junior forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored the game's only goal on a corner kick off the foot of sophomore Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) in the 11th minute and the Monks' defense held the Eagles to just seven shots with two on target on the evening.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) was forced to make just two saves in what was the 17th shutout performance of his collegiate career.

Husson senior Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, N.J.) recorded three saves in a losing bid.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (14-7) and shots on goal (4-2) while both teams tallied a trio of corner kicks in the season opener.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's is now 5-20 in the history of the series with Husson University and has now defeated the Eagles in consecutive meetings – by identical 1-0 scores – for the first time.

The Monks are now 9-13-6 all-time in season openers after posting ties in each of the last two inaugural contests.
