PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Saint Joseph's College (3-0-0, 1-0-0 GNAC) opened conference play with a 1-0 victory over Johnson & Wales University (2-1-0, 0-1-0 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks got on the board in the 12th minute, when sophomore Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) one-timed a header off a Rory Twomey (South Windsor, Conn.) throw-in at the 11:31 mark.
Saint Joseph's nearly doubled their lead in the 24th minute, when the Monks were awarded a penalty kick after the Wildcats were slapped with a handball infraction inside the box. Junior Dalton Gaumer (Corona, Calif.), who entered the game 4-4 in his career on PK attempts, let fly a kick towards the left corner, but JWU senior keeper Nicholas Mancini (Toms River, N.J.) made a diving stop to preserve his team's one-goal deficit.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior goalie Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) made three saves to record the 18th shutout of his NCAA career while Mancini recorded five stops in a losing bid.
TEAM STATS:
The conference counterparts were very even on the stat sheet, with the Monks holding slight advantages in shots (8-7) and shots on goal (6-3) and both teams taking four corner kicks as well as being hit with 12 fouls apiece.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the triumph, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-7 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales University and has now defeated the Wildcats in consecutive meetings after dropping five straight versus the GNAC rival from 2012 to 2015.

The Monks will host UMaine-Farmington Wednesday in a non-conference contest slated to start at 8:00 PM at Deering Memorial Stadium in Portland.
