Men Kick Off Outdoor Season at Snowflake Classic

MEDFORD, MA – The Saint Joseph's College outdoor men's track & field team placed 21st with seven points in the Tufts University Snowflake Classic on Saturday.

Seven men's outdoor records were also broken on Saturday. Senior Faisal Abdillahi (Lewiston, Maine) broke the 800-meter run (1:59.53) mark, freshman Nick Shuckrow (Winslow, Maine) topped the 1500-meter run record (4:27.76), freshman Shaun Young (Wentworth, N.H.) bested the 100-meter dash (12.19) time and sophomore Andrew Caron (Gardiner, Maine) erased his own team mark by nearly 43 seconds with an 11:12.94 effort in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Sophomore Sam Dunay (Groton, Conn.) also broke his 110-meter hurdles record with a 17.93 performance while first-year Calvin Field (Windham, Maine) posted a team-record 1.83m effort in the high jump and the quartet of Young, Billy Brooks (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Dunay and Field set a new team-best in the 4 x 100 meter relay (46.94).

Caron and Field posted sixth-place finishes in the steeplechase and high jump events, respectively, while Abdillahi also notched a top-10 performance with an eighth-place effort in the 800-meter event.

The women also placed 21st and notched six total points in the event. Six team records fell in the 2014 outdoor opener, with junior Amber Dostie (Standish, Maine) leading the effort by breaking the 1500-meter run (5:06.89) and 800-meter run (2:38.58) marks in the event. Freshman Marisa Lundy (Merrimac, Mass.) snapped the 100-meter dash record with a 14.89 time while fellow first-years Gabby Lodge (Westbrook, Maine) and Mikaela Rowell (Derry, N.H.) broke the second-year program's previous bests in the discus throw (26.71m) and long jump (4.01m) events, respectively.

The Monks' 4 x 100 meter relay quartet, featuring Sarah Bakun (Clinton, Mass.), Lundy, Hailey Frisbee (Kittery Point, Maine) and Riley Jones (Winslow, Maine) also set a team record with a 59.49 performance and placed 11th overall.

Junior Heather Eaton (Lincolnville, Maine) notched a fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase (12:23) while Lodge placed eighth in the discus in the event, which featured participants from NCAA DI and DII institutions as well as a list of the elite NCAA DIII New England programs.
