Saint Joseph's Cruises Past Northland

FORT MYERS, FL - Saint Joe's (3-0) took advantage of 16 walks by Northland pitchers en route to a 21-3 win today at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Cape Coral, Florida. Sixteen players contributed in the one-sided contest with 7 players scoring two or more runs.

Winning pitcher senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) led St. Joe's with a double, 2 walks and 4 runs scored. First year Deb Drown had a single, 2 walks and 3 runs scored while sophomore Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) had 2 singles and 2 walks.

Northland jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning after a single by Melissa Grego, a double by Katie Zaban and singles by Alicia Homolu and Julie Deplaines.

The Lady Monks responded quickly, taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. First year Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) drove in a run on a sacrifice to right field after Northland walked four and hit a batter.

St. Joe's scored 7 more runs in the 2nd inning to stretch the lead to 10-2. Desplaines and Lindsey Lesmeister hit doubles for Northland and Desplaines scored their final run of the game in the third inning.

Nine more walks by Northland and another hit batter led to an 11 run fourth inning for St. Joe's, making the score 21-3. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the 8 run rule after sophomore Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) struck out two Northland batters.
