Monks Split on Final Day of Southern Swing

CLERMONT, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (5-5) split a pair of games on the final day of the team's 2016 spring trip, topping Saint Mary's College (IN), 4-2, and falling to Haverford College, 7-2, in the NTC Spring Games at Hancock Park on Friday.

Saint Joseph's 4, St. Mary's 2

The Monks faced a 2-0 deficit going into the bottom of the fourth against the Belles, a team that posted a mercy-rule (11-2) victory over the Royal Blue on Sunday but managed to score four runs off five hits in the bottom of the frame to secure the two-run cushion.

Saint Joseph's loaded the bases with singles, as Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine), Megen Pollini (Wolfeboro, N.H.), and Meghan Elliott (Blackstone, Mass.) rapped base knocks to set the table for Melodie Bailey (Lebanon, Maine), who tied the game with a two-run single to left field. Elliott scored the go-ahead run on a Katie Chadbourne (Jaffrey, N.H.) groundout and Mariah Harrison (Buxton, Maine) provided some breathing room with an RBI single.

Pitching with the lead for the first time in this game, Smith bore down and allowed just one baserunner over the final three frames en route to picking up her third victory in as many starts this spring. The freshman hurler allowed one earned run off five hits and two walks with a pair of K's in the complete-game effort.

Bailey, the Monks' lone repeat hitter, went 2-2 with a run and a pair of RBI in the triumph.

Haverford 8, Saint Joseph's 1

The outlook appeared bright through four innings for the Monks in their final game of the week, as senior starter Erica Boulanger (Somersworth, N.H.) allowed just three hits over four scoreless frames and St. Joe's grabbed a 1-0 lead on a misplayed ball in the second.

But the wheels would fall off in the fifth when Haverford tallied six hits – including a two-run homer - and took advantage of three SJC errors to grab a 6-1 advantage. The Fords tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to account for the 8-1 final.

The Monks stranded 13 baserunners in the loss and left the bases juiced in the first, third, and sixth innings.

Bailey, Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, Maine), and Kelsy Gaddy (Limington, Maine) registered two hits apiece in the setback while Boulanger took the loss after giving up six runs (three earned) off eight hits with a pair of K's over four innings. Junior Kylie McFadden (Dover, N.H.) allowed two runs off four hits with two strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Saint Joseph's is off until Wednesday, March 30th when the Monks host in-state rival University of New England in a doubleheader slated to begin at 3:00 PM.
