STANDISH, Maine – Bowdoin College (23-6, 5-1 NESCAC) swept Saint Joseph's College (9-13, 5-3 GNAC) with 9-5 and 11-0 victories in non-conference softball action at Richard W. Bailey Field on Tuesday evening.
GAME ONE:
In the opener, the Monks found themselves in a 7-1 hole after two innings and trailed 9-2 after five and a half frames. The hosts managed to score three runs off two hits in the bottom of the fifth, but could get no closer in a four-run setback.
For Saint Joseph's, freshman right fielder Madisyn Charest (Sidney, Maine) was 2-3 with a run scored, sophomore shortstop Meghan Elliott (Blackstone, Mass.) went 1-3 with a run, a double, and two RBI, and senior Jennifer Murphy (Andover, Mass.) doubled in a run in the fourth.
For Bowdoin, senior left fielder Emily Griffin (Tucson, Ariz.) went 3-5 with two runs, a double, and an RBI and sophomore first baseman Caroline Rice (Santa Ana, Calif.) was 2-4 with two RBI.
SJC senior starter Kylie McFadden (Dover, N.H.) falls to 4-5 on the season after allowing seven runs (four earned) off five hits and three walks in two innings. Sophomore Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine) tossed a pair of scoreless frames while allowing three hits and three walks with a strikeout and freshman Katelyn Olsen (Hartford, Maine) yielded two runs off two hits and two walks in three innings of relief.
Bowdoin freshman starter Katie Hoadley (Plaistow, N.H.) gave up two runs (one earned) off four hits with two K's in four innings to improve to 5-0 on the season and Griffin allowed three runs off three hits and a walk with one punch-out in three innings of work.
GAME TWO:
The Polar Bears were in control from the start in the nightcap, as the visitors scored six runs in the first and tacked on two in the third and three in the fourth to stake an 11-0 cushion.
The Monks were held to just one hit – senior left fielder Casidee Couture (Jay, Maine) doubled in the bottom of the third and was the only SJC batter to reach base in the mercy-rule loss.
Bowdoin sophomore starter Samantha Roy (Washington, D.C.) and freshman Allison Rutz (Essex Junction, Vt.) combined to toss five innings of one-hit ball with a pair of punch-outs. The duo faced just one batter over the minimum in the five-inning triumph.
SJC freshman starter Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) took the loss and falls to 1-4 on the season after yielding six runs (four earned) off 10 hits in 1.1 innings. Freshman Caitlyn King (Old Town, Maine) gave up five runs off seven hits and a walk with three K's in 3.2 innings of relief.
