Softball Falls to WPI, Misericordia

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (0-4) suffered a pair of losses in the Sunkissed Games on Monday afternoon. The Monks fell to WPI (3-1), 3-2, and Misericordia (2-2), 10-3, on the second day of their spring break trip.

GAME ONE: WPI 3, Saint Joseph's 2

Saint Joseph's grabbed the lead in the top of the second, when junior first baseman Melodie Bailey (Lebanon, Maine) doubled to right and later scored on a Maizie Lee (Saco, Maine) single. The Monks doubled their lead in the third, when junior left fielder Danielle Pinkham (Damariscotta, Maine) scored on a two-out single off the bat of Bailey.

WPI cut into the deficit with a run off two hits in the third and claimed the lead with two runs off one hit in the sixth, when junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, N.Y.) doubled home a run and later scored on an infield groundout.

ON THE MOUND:

Junior Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine) allowed three runs off five hits and a walk over six innings and falls to 0-2 on the season with the setback. WPI freshman starter Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, Calif.) improved to 2-0 after yielding two runs off five hits with five K's in seven solid frames.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Bailey was 3-3 with a run, a double, and an RBI and was the game's lone repeat-hitter

GAME TWO: Misericordia 10, Saint Joseph's 3

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Monks tied the game with two runs of their own off five hits, with sophomore third baseman Kaylee Burns (Saco, Maine) and freshman catcher Makayla Cooper (Fryeburg, Maine) both rapping RBI singles.

Misericordia gained a 4-2 lead with two runs off a pair of hits in the fourth and the wheels fell off in the fifth, when the Cougars plated six runs off eight hits en route to claiming a 10-2 cushion. Freshman shortstop Amanda Butera (Collegeville, Pa.) provided the big hit with a three-run homer well beyond the left field wall.

The Monks managed to stave off the mercy rule with a run off two hits in the fifth, when junior shortstop Meghan Elliott (Mendon, Mass.) led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.

ON THE MOUND:

Sophomore starter Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) took the loss after giving up four runs off seven hits and three walks with five K's over 3.2 innings and sophomore hurler Caitlyn King (Old Town, Maine) allowed six runs off eight hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Smith and freshman Madeline Wood (Madison, Maine) both tossed scoreless frames in relief.

Misericordia starter Victoria Schmidt (Bethlehem, Pa.) went the distance, allowing three runs off 12 hits with a pair of K's to pick up her first win of the season.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Burns was 3-4 with an RBI
  • Elliott went 2-3 with a pair of runs
  • Bailey was 2-4 with a run scored

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's returns to action Wednesday, when the Monks face Montclair State (9:00 AM) and Penn State-New Kensington (11:15 AM).
