UMFK Edges Saint Joseph's, 74-71

CASTINE, ME - The University of Maine at Fort Kent (3-5) outlasted Saint Joseph's (6-4), 74-71, in the Maine Maritime Tournament consolation game on Sunday afternoon. Carolyn Freeman (Portland, ME/McAuley) and Meghan Daigle '10 (Grantham, NH) both scored 13 points in the loss. Ashley Ames '09 (Dexter, ME) led a quartet of Bengals in double-figures with a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds.

After six minutes of play, he Lady Bengals led the Lady Monks by a 12-3 margin after Shir Fuchs '11 (Herzeliya, Israel) hit the first of her three treys in the game. St. Joe's rifled off a 9-3 run in the subsequent two minutes and trailed by three points, 15-12, after SJC point guard Erin Cartwright '11 (Acton, MA) scored on back-to-back possessions.

Fort Kent went on to outscore St. Joe's 23-12 for the remainder of the first half and took a 38-24 lead into intermission. Ames and Maliesha Caesar '12 (Cayon, St. Kitts) both notched nine points for the Lady Bengals and Freeman netted six points to lead the Royal Blue in the opening stanza.

Aided by 25 points from the bench, the Lady Monks outscored UMFK 47-36, and connected at a 54.3% clip from the field, in the second half to fight their way back into the game.

The Lady Monks nearly stole the game in the final minute as a trio of three pointers, two from Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland, ME), cut the UMFK lead to two, 73-71, with five seconds left in regulation. Fort Kent held on with a 6-8 performance from the charity stripe in the final minute to preserve the three point triumph, 74-71.

For St. Joe's, Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) talled 11 points and six rebounds and Cartwright and McDevitt, who drained 3-4 trey attempts, both scored nine points. Ashley Geel '12 (St.George, ME) scored seven points and grabbed six boards in her first collegiate start.

Meghan Daigle averaged 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in the two tourney contests and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

For UMFK, Fuchs notched 13 points, six boards and five assists and Amber Garrison '11 (Oroville, CA) and All-Tournament Team honoree Kristen Violette '10 (Fort Kent, ME) each added 12 points. Along with the double-dip effort, Ames added three blocks in the win.

UMFK held a slim edge in both rebounds (45-41) and shooting percentage (44.1%-40.9%) over Saint Joseph's, but made nearly twice as many trips to the line and converted 19-29 of their FT attempts in the win.

Endicott defeated Maine Maritime, 72-60, in the title game to clam the 2008 Mariner Classic Championship. Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH) poured in a game-high 23 points and was named the Mariner Classic Most Valuable Player while Endicott's Ashley Wright (Merrimack, NH) and Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) from MMA were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

Saint Joseph's will host Bates College on Tuesday, December 16th at 5:30 PM.
