Blue Jays Defeat Monks, 62-49

WEST HARTFORD, CT – Saint Joseph's (13-8, 5-3 GNAC) fell to St. Joseph (CT) (15-5, 6-3 GNAC), 62-49, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball contest on Thursday night. Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) scored 14 points and added eight rebounds in the setback.

The decision in the conference contest came down to three-point and free throw shooting. St. Joe's made only two three-pointers and shot a season-low 11.1% (2-18) from three-point distance with a 5-10 performance from the FT line in the losing effort. St. Joseph (CT) shot 47.1% (8-17) from beyond the arc and was 16-21 (76.2%) from the charity stripe en route to victory.

Blue Jays freshman Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, CT) was the Monks' prime nemesis, as the first-year guard scored a game-high 27 points and shot 4-6 from downtown and 11-11 from the line for the hosts.

The Monks jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the opening minutes and held a lead for the better part of the first half, but the Blue Jays outscored the visitors by an 18-7 margin during the final seven minutes of the opening stanza and carried a 34-25 cushion into intermission. St. Joseph (CT) did not relinquish its lead during the second period.

For the Monks, Abby Young '14 (North Yarmouth, ME) added 11 points, seven caroms, three blocks and two steals and Casey Drake '11 (Lebanon, NH) netted eight points, four boards and two assists.

For the Blue Jays, Nathalie Mastarreno '11 (Glastonbury, CT) scored 13 points with five boards and Adele Ruel '14 (Burlington, CT) added 11 points and six caroms.

For the Monks, the loss to St. Joseph (CT) is the first in four contests between the GNAC rivals.

Both teams will host conference counterparts on Saturday in 1:00 PM tip-offs. Saint Joseph's will host Lasell College while St. Joseph (CT) hosts Simmons College.
