Saint Joseph’s Topples Fisher, 85-55

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman forward Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) poured in a career-high 20 points with eight rebounds and junior center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) netted 18 to help Saint Joseph's College (15-6) past Fisher College (3-17), 85-55, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Alfond Center on Wednesday evening.

The Monks never trailed in the lopsided victory as the hosts totaled 27 points off 20 Fisher turnovers and recorded a whopping 53-0 margin in bench points on the night. Waggett led the SJC subs' scoring performance by posting her team-high tally in just 18 minutes off the bench.

In all, 11 different Saint Joseph's players were listed on the scoring ledger, with freshman guard Emily Quirion (Augusta, Maine) tallying 13 points, four assists and three rebounds while sophomore forward Molly Mack (Portland, Maine/McAuley) and freshman forward Brianna Holdren (Portland, Maine) netted eight points apiece. Holdren also pulled down seven rebounds and junior guard Shannon McFayden (Ipswich, Mass.) chipped in with six points in the convincing victory.

Fisher freshman guard Murphy Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) led all scorers with 25 points while junior guard Sakieya Roland-Drake (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore guard Alexis Akridge (Union, N.J.) scored nine points apiece in the losing effort.

Saint Joseph's kicked off the contest with eight straight points and held a 10-2 lead after Cahill hit a jumper at the 18:10 mark. The Falcons momentarily climbed back into the game with three-pointers from Christine Briggs (Rumford, Maine) and Murphy Carroll, with the latter cutting the visitors' deficit down to 13-8 with 15:51 before the break.

The Monks proceeded to put the game out of reach for good with the help of a 12-2 run, which was closed out with a Waggett layup and the Monks on top, 25-10, with 12:09 left in the first half. St. Joe's went on to claim their first 20-point lead when Waggett tapped in a layup at the 3:40 mark and carried a 47-23 cushion into intermission.

Saint Joseph's held no less than a 23-point lead for the entire second half and claimed a game-high 31-point cushion when Cahill connected on a jumpshot to make it a 54-23 contest with 16:18 remaining.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-0 all-time versus Fisher College, a team the Monks defeated by a 73-51 margin in the only other meeting between the two programs, a game that was played in Boston on January 6th, 2007.

Next up for Saint Joseph's is an important conference match-up versus Emmanuel College, a game that will be played at home on Saturday starting at 1:00 PM. Fisher plays at Pine Manor College at 1:00 PM on Sunday in what will be the team's 2014-15 regular-season finale.
