STANDISH, Maine – Weekly accolades have been released and Saint Joseph's College senior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) has been selected as the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Player of the Week. She is also listed on the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honor rolls.
Benway averaged 18.0 points and 13.5 rebounds while shooting 53.3% (16-30) from the floor in a pair of victories last week. In a 93-71 victory over Bates College on Saturday, the senior forward scored 24 points off an 11-17 shooting performance to become the 24th member of the Monks' 1,000-point club. She posted a pair of double-doubles on the week as she grabbed 12 rebounds in the win over Bates and scored 12 points with a career-high 15 rebounds in a 71-55 triumph over University of New England on Wednesday.
Through seven games this season Benway is averaging 13.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game while shooting 56.5% (39-69) from the floor and 60% (15-25) from the free throw line. She currently leads the team in rebounding and field goal percentage and ranks second on the squad in scoring average.
For Benway, the MWBCA Player of the Week honor is the second of her career. She last earned the accolade on December 12th, 2016.
Saint Joseph's (7-0), ranked 12th and 16th nationally in the latest D3hoops.com and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) weekly polls, will host Colby College on Thursday at 6:00 PM.
