Monks Hold Off Corsairs, 65-54

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (7-5) rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to defeat UMass.-Dartmouth (7-4), 65-54, in second round play of the Springfield Hampton Inn Naismith Classic Thursday afternoon at Blake Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Trailing 29-23 heading into the third quarter, the Monks opened the penultimate period with seven unanswered points to claim a one-point edge and netted six straight early in the fourth frame as part of an 11-0 run to take the lead for good.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks shot 40.0% (8-20) from three-point range while the Corsairs made just three trifectas on 32 attempts for a 9.4% clip from downtown…St. Joe's posted a solid 84.0% (21-25) rate from the free-throw line in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior guard Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) netted 18 points with three assists and was 10-for-11 from the free-throw line
  • Sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) added 17 points and six rebounds and made five of seven shots from beyond the arc
  • Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) chipped in with 10 points and six boards
  • Sophomore guard Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) came off the bench to net six points

LEADERS – UMASS.-DARTMOUTH:

  • Ashley Brown nearly posted a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and eight steals
  • Shaelyn Carreiro also notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards
  • Lauren Empey contributed added 12 points and six rebounds

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:

Fillion garnered All-Tournament honors after averaging 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 54.5% (12-22) from the field and 70% (7-10) from three-point distance in the two tourney tilts.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory Saint Joseph's improves to 2-0 all-time versus UMass.-Dartmouth. The last time these teams met, the Monks tipped the Corsairs by an 81-80 margin in double-overtime in the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament on November 19th, 2010.
