STANDISH, Maine – The eighth Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) weekly honors have been announced and Saint Joseph's College junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) has been selected as the MWBCA Player of the Week.
Stapelfeld averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.01 steals while shooting 48.1% (13-27) from the floor, 35.3% (6-17) from three-point distance, and 100% (5-5) from the FT line in a 1-1 week for the Monks. The junior guard netted 21 points off an 8-for-12 shooting effort in a hard-fought loss to Worcester State on Tuesday and added 16 points and five assists in a lopsided triumph over Norwich on Saturday.
In her first year at Saint Joseph's, the junior transfer is averaging 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 38.5% (69-179) from the floor, 36.5% (31-85) from downtown, and 90% (27-90) from the FT line.
Stapelfeld transferred to St. Joe's from Simmons University, where she earned First Team All-Conference honors after netting 21.8 points per game while shooting 43.9% (182-415) from the floor, 35.8% (54-151) from three-point distance, and 86.5% (128-148) from the FT line in 25 games during her sophomore season. She ranked seventh in the country – and second in the GNAC - in scoring average for the Sharks, who ceased sponsorship for women's basketball following the completion of the 2018-19 campaign.
Prior to her year at Simmons, Stapelfeld suited up for Endicott College, where she averaged 10.0 points and 1.1 rebounds per game while shooting 45.9% (83-181) from the floor, 40.5% (45-111) from three-point range, and 86.4% (38-44) from the FT line during a standout freshman season. She was selected as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Year after earning weekly conference honors for six-consecutive weeks and led the CCC in three-point percentage.
For her career, Stapelfeld is averaging 15.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists with shooting percentages of 43.1% (334-775), 37.5% (130-347), and 86.9% (193-222) from the field, beyond the arc, and the FT line, respectively, in 65 games over three seasons.
Saint Joseph's will host Johnson & Wales University tomorrow in a conference contest slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
