Monks Win Fourth Straight, Stapelfeld Scores 1,000th Point

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (11-6, 4-0 GNAC) tipped Albertus Magnus College (11-6, 3-2 GNAC), 70-62, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon. The Monks have now won four-consecutive games and are 6-2 in 2020.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The conference rivals proved to be nearly even in the first half, as neither team mounted more than a two-possession lead in the opening 20 minutes with the Falcons carrying a 36-32 advantage into intermission.

The Monks managed to claim the victory with a dominant third quarter, during which the visitors notched a 25-10 run en route to claiming a game-high 57-46 lead with 3:57 left in the penultimate period.

Saint Joseph's clung to a 61-55 edge after three quarters and held on to win after neither team mustered much offense in the fourth frame, as just 16 total points (9-7, SJC) were registered while the Falcons shot just 7.7% (1-13) from the floor in the final 10-minute segment.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Albertus Magnus shot just 27.9% (19-68) from the floor, including an 18.2% (4-22) mark from three-point range, in the setback…The Monks outscored the Falcons by a 29-19 margin and shot 47.4% (9-19) from the field, 55.6% (5-9) from downtown, and 75.0% (6-8) from the free-throw line in the third quarter…Saint Joseph's held a 17-7 lead in bench points on the afternoon.

MILESTONE MET:

Junior Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.), who entered today's game five points shy of the 1,000-point plateau, hit the milestone on the button when she netted a pair of free throws at the 2:53 mark of the first quarter. Stapelfeld, who tallied 795 points combined during her freshman and sophomore seasons, transferred to Saint Joseph's after her previous institution (Simmons) ceased sponsorship of women's basketball following the 2019 campaign. With 20 points in today's victory, Stapelfeld has scored 220 points for the Monks and has totaled 1,015 points across 67 career contests.
