WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College sealed an epic double-overtime victory, defeating Saint Joseph's College 13-12 in a non-conference women's lacrosse tilt on Saturday night at Bill Alfond Field. Junior Jennifer Day dodged through the Monks defense and found the back of the net with just five seconds remaining to seal the come from behind win.
St. Joe's brought the contest into extra time as Krystal Walsh darted up the field in the final seconds of play, wrapping around the net then putting the ball past Terrier net minder Brittany Fox with one second remaining on the game clock.
The opening half saw both teams score in spurts, with momentum shifting throughout. The Red and Black kicked off the scoring barrage with two quick goals by Brittany Premo and Erin Nelligan, but their counterparts responded with three straight to take an early 3-2 advantage.
Premo added her second of the period at 17:28 to cut even the score, then a goal by Jilliam Lambert minutes later gave the hosts a slim one goal lead. The Monks capitalized on two man-up opportunities midway through the first to regain a two goal advantage.
Miranda Tinsman countered for Thomas with back to back goals to get the squad within one at 8:02. The Royal Blue however ended the opening stanza on a 4-0 run, which gave them a 9-6 lead at halftime.
Thomas came out strong in the second, as Day started off the scoring at 26:52 on a free position shot. After an SJC goal by Kat Gadbois minutes later, the Terriers went on a 4-0 run to take the lead back in the final minutes of play.
In overtime Premo scored the lone goal in the first half - man-up off a pass from Sophia LaVallee. Chelsea Black answered at the 2:22 mark in the second OT period to even the score at 12-12, but would not hold up as Day added her fourth goal of the night with five seconds on the clock to give the Terriers their second win on the season.
Tinsman and Day each had four goals in the victory, while Gadbois and Cassie Diplock led the Monks with three goals apiece.
Fox recorded the win in net for the Red and Black, recording four saves. Her counterpart Haley Nason suffered the loss for the Monks, while making eight saves.
Overall, St. Joe's held an 18-10 advantage in draw controls, while Thomas had a 49-35 edge in groundballs and outshot their opponent 28-23.
Saint Joseph's is set to host Bates College on Monday in a 4:30 PM start at Deering Memorial Stadium. Thomas will return to the turf on Thursday, March 20 as they travel to Regis. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
