PORTLAND, ME – Bates College (6-1, 2-1 NESCAC) toppled Saint Joseph's College (1-4, 1-0 GNAC), 17-3 in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The visiting Bobcats, ranked eighth nationally in the latest Lacrosse Magazine poll and 13th in the most recent IWLCA rankings, scored the game's first nine goals and held an 11-1 lead going into intermission.
With the clock running, Bates outscored Saint Joseph's by a 6-2 margin in the second stanza to account for the 17-3 final.
Sophomore Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine), senior Cassie Diplock (Augusta, Maine) and sophomore Mary Leasure (Portland, Maine/McAuley) scored for the Monks with junior Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) assisting on the latter marker.
In all, nine different players scored for Bates, including sophomore attack Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.), who led all players with three goals and three assists in the triumph. Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.), Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.), Cara Cappellini (Manhasset, N.Y.), Cora Hirschfield (Shutesbury, Mass.), Alex Briody (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Suzannah Smith (Brunswick, Maine) netted two goals apiece while Bridget Meedzan (Ipswich, Mass.) added a goal and an assist and Blair Shrewsbury (Boxford, Mass.) rounded out the list of Bobcat scorers. Kelan McCann (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed three assists and Emma Brinkman (Rye, N.Y.) added a pair of helpers on the afternoon.
Seniors Haley Nason (Saco, Maine) and Elizabeth Giacchino (Melrose, Mass.) and freshman Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Mass.) all logged time in goal for the Monks and combined to make a pair of saves in the loss. Senior defender Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H.) picked up seven ground balls and senior midfielder Anneka Adame (San Diego, Calif.) added three draw controls for the hosts.
Bates keeper Jill Conway (Andover, Mass.) registered three stops in the victory. Soohee Yoon (Lexington, Mass.), Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.) and Grace Wright (Rutland, Vt.) scooped up four ground balls apiece while Pierce, Cappellini and Erin Shea (Marshfield, Mass.) all grabbed three draw controls in the victory.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Thursday with a contest versus University of Southern Maine at 4:30 PM. Bates, winners of five straight, hosts Endicott College at 4:30 PM on Wednesday.
