Monks Roll Past Eagles, 17-8

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-1) negated an early two-goal deficit by netting nine unanswered markers in a matter of 12 minutes en route to defeating Husson University (0-1), 17-8, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest on Thursday afternoon. Junior attack Mary Leasure (South Portland, Maine/McAuley) tied a career-high with five goals in the victory.

Husson junior Alissa Fallon (Kennebunk, Maine) scored twice in the opening two and a half minutes and propelled the host-Eagles to a 4-2 lead with her third of five goals on the afternoon with 15:02 remaining in the first half. Senior midfielder Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) ignited the Monks' offense with her first tally of the young season at the 12:56 mark and Leasure proceeded to knot the game at 4-4 with her second score with 10:14 left in the first frame. Sophomore midfielder Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) put the visitors on top, for good, as it played out, when she beat Husson goalie Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, R.I.) with a shot just 11 seconds later.

With the help of three goals from Leasure and one apiece from freshman Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus), sophomore Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) over the final eight minutes of the opening period, the Monks owned an 11-4 cushion heading into intermission.

In the opening nine minutes of the second stanza, the Eagles outscored the Monks by a 3-2 margin to cut their deficit to 13-7, but St. Joe's thwarted the comeback bid with three-consecutive scores off shots by Caiazzo, Gadbois and junior attack Elizabeth Elcock (Westwood, Mass.), who netted three goals in the second half alone.

For the Monks, Caiazzo totaled four goals and six ground balls, Gadbois tallied two goals, two assists, 10 ground balls (career high) and five draw controls and Calnan added a goal with 11 ground balls, seven draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers in the triumph.

Fallon paced the Eagles with five goals, Michaela Bicknell (West Addison, Vt.) added a goal, two assists, nine ground balls and four draw controls, and Rashell Saucier (Washburn, Maine) contributed nine ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in a losing bid.

In goal, sophomore Meghan Fullarton (Windham, Maine), making her first collegiate start between the pipes, made two saves while facing 11 total shots to pick up the victory. Dolloff made 16 saves in net for the Eagles.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-0-1 in the history of the series with Husson University, a team the Monks defeated by a 17-3 score last season.

Saint Joseph's returns to action with a game versus Maine Maritime Academy at Deering Memorial Stadium on Monday at 5:00 PM.
