BOSTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (7-2, 4-0 GNAC) remained undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 13-10 victory over Simmons College (5-8, 2-3 GNAC) on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Simmons held a 2-0 lead after six minutes of play, but Saint Joseph's answered with five consecutive goals, including three from junior midfielder Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus), and held a 7-4 cushion heading into intermission.
The Monks extended their lead to six (11-6) after sophomore Samantha Medlin (Kingston, Mass.) scored off a Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) feed with 18:49 left in the second stanza. The Sharks outscored the visitors by a 5-2 margin for the remainder of the contest, but St. Joe's managed to hang on for the conference win.
THE KEEPERS:
Saint Joseph's freshman Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) recorded 10 saves in the victory while Simmons junior netminder Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) posted a pair of stops in the losing effort.
LEADERS – SANT JOSEPH'S:
- Senior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) tallied four goals and an assist with three ground balls and five draw controls
- Caiazzo netted four goals with an assist and added three draw controls and two caused turnovers
- Kelly chipped in with two goals and an assist
- Sophomore Kara Kelly (York, Maine) added a goal and two assists
- Freshman Micary Verville (Portland, Maine/Deering) contributed a goal with four ground balls
LEADERS – SIMMONS:
- Sophomore Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) scored three goals with an assist, three ground balls, six draw controls, and two caused turnovers
- Junior Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted three goals with a pair of ground balls
- Sophomore Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) registered a goal with two assists
- Sophomore Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) added a goal with two ground balls and three caused turnovers
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-5 in the history of the series with Simmons College and has now defeated the Sharks in three consecutive meetings. The Monks have now won 22 consecutive GNAC contests dating back to the 2015 campaign.
