STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse postseason awards have been released and seven Saint Joseph's College players have been honored.
Senior midfielder Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) and senior defender Brianne Maloney (South Portland, Maine) and earned First Team All-GNAC honors, junior attack Kara Kelly (York, Maine) and junior midfielders Brittany Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) and Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) are listed on the Second Team, and sophomore attack Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) and freshman defender Liz Callahan (Scarborough, Maine) have claimed Third Team honors.
Caiazzo earns First Team All-GNAC honors for the fourth-consecutive season after tallying 59 goals and nine assists for 68 total points with 58 ground balls, 103 draw controls, and 21 caused turnovers in 16 games this spring. The 2015 GNAC Rookie of the Year and 2017 Player of the Year honoree ranked third in the conference in ground balls and draw controls and was fifth in free-position goals (17) and seventh in goals. Caiazzo finished her final collegiate season ranked fourth among active NCAA DIII players in career goals (263), ninth in ground balls (242), and 10th in total points (319).
Arguably the best player in program history, Caiazzo graduates owning 14 team records, including the high-water marks for career goals (263), points (319), and free-position goals (51). She became the first SJC player to surpass the 300-point plateau after netting four goals in a 20-10 victory over Norwich on April 7th.
Maloney collects First Team All-GNAC acclaim for the second-consecutive season after tallying 27 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers, and five draw controls this spring. The capped her career with 78 ground balls, 61 caused turnovers, and 10 draw controls in 61 contests over four seasons.
Kayla Kelly claims her first All-Conference nod after scoring 44 goals with 13 assists for 57 total points while posting 84 draw controls with team-highs in ground balls (75) and caused turnovers (26) this spring. Through three seasons, Kelly has tallied 74 goals and 31 assists for 105 total points with 124 ground balls, 109 draw controls, and 46 caused turnovers in 51 career contests.
Arsenault also earns All-GNAC honors for the first time after registering career-highs in goals (17), assists (6), points (23), shots (30), ground balls (32), draw controls (46), and caused turnovers (20) this spring. The junior captain heads into her final collegiate season with 20 goals, 10 assists, 85 ground balls, 54 draw controls, and 34 caused turnovers in 52 career contests.
Kara Kelly takes Second Team All-Conference honors after scoring 36 goals with 14 assists for 50 total points with 40 ground balls, eight draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers this spring. In 51 career games, she has tallied 68 goals and 34 assists for 102 points with 83 ground balls, 17 draw controls, and 21 caused turnovers.
Beaulieu also enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore and tallied 23 goals and 17 assists for 40 total points while picking up 24 ground balls with 11 caused turnovers as a senior year starter. In two years, the sophomore standout has netted 39 goals with 27 assists for 66 points while contributing 47 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers in 16 games this season.
Callahan claims Third Team All-GNAC acclaim after hauling in 13 ground balls with seven caused turnovers during her freshman season.
Under the watch of Head Coach Rupert Lewis, Saint Joseph's College closed out the 2018 campaign with an 11-5 overall record, including a 7-3 mark in GNAC play, last spring en route to earning the #5 seed in the GNAC Tournament. The Monks played at #4 Regis (Mass.) on Saturday, April 28th and suffered a season-ending 9-6 loss at the hands of the Pride.
