NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team fell in a tight battle to conference foe Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon by a 15-10 final score on One Love Day at Norwich University.
The Monks struck first with a goal at the 1:00 mark, but Norwich quickly responded with a Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.) free position goal followed by a Brynn Mendes (Centerville, Mass.) goal off a sweet feed from Missy Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to make it 2-1 Cadets early.
After the Monks regained the lead with a pair of goals of their own, Norwich responded with five unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead. Saint Joseph's closed the gap, as the game sat at 8-5 with under a minute to go. After a Norwich turnover in the defensive zone, Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) made a great clutch save to stop a potential buzzer-beating goal from the stick of Emily Ryan (Wakefield, Mass.) to send Norwich into the break with the three-goal lead.
Saint Joseph's came out of the break and scored three goals in less than three minutes to knot up the game. Winstanley stopped the Monks for a brief moment with an unassisted goal, but the Monks snapped right back with three more unanswered goals to take an 11-9 lead. A 4-0 run to close the game provided the Monks all the room they needed to coast to the 15-10 victory.
Junior Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) scored four goals with an assist and four ground balls while freshman Logan Champlin (Alfred, Maine) produced three goals and four draw controls and sophomore Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) added three tallies on four shots. Sophomore Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) contributed two goals, two assists and five ground balls and senior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) chipped in with a goal and a game-high nine draw controls.
Freshman Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) turned in a solid performance with 12 saves to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Kate Winstanley set a new career-high with five goals on eight shots, while Brynn Mendes put together a four-point day with three goals and an assist. The freshman has recorded multiple points in seven of her nine appearances in her first year in the maroon and gold. Lawson Hayes made 12 saves across 60:00 exceptional minutes in goal but took the hard-luck loss to fall to 4-5 this year.
Saint Joseph's, now 5-4 overall and 5-1 in GNAC play, will play at Emmanuel College on Thursday in a conference contest slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
Norwich falls to 4-5 as a team this year, with a 3-4 mark within the conference. They'll be back in action Monday night at home against Southern Vermont at 7:00 PM.
