STANDISH, Maine – Senior Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) scored a free-position goal 1:51 into overtime to launch Lasell College (14-3, 9-2 GNAC) past Saint Joseph's College (9-7, 7-4 GNAC), 12-11, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.
PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS:
With the win, Lasell clinches the #3 seed in the conference tournament and will host sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's in a quarterfinal contest this Saturday at 12:00 PM.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Senior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored twice to help the hosts secure a commanding 5-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes, but the Lasers responded with a 7-0 run – which included three goals from junior Amanda DiLeonardo (West Haven, Conn.) - to conclude the first half with a 7-5 lead over the Monks.
After the intermission, SJC tallied three straight goals in the first 5:32 of the half to retake the lead. A DiLeonardo marker at the 23:21 mark knotted the game at 8-8, but the Monks answered with three straight strikes with the latter – a Kara Kelly (York, Maine) goal – making it an 11-8 game with 11:50 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Monks, the outcome did not turn in their favor, as a pair of untimely yellow cards helped the Lasers tie the game in the closing 10 minutes to set the stage for McComb in overtime.
