Monks Take Beavers in Three Sets

FARMINGTON, ME – Saint Joseph's (9-3, 3-1 GNAC) blanked University of Maine-Farmington (3-6, 0-0 NAC), 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20), in a non-conference volleyball match at Dearborn Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, Maine) tallied 11 digs, nine kills and three block assists in the victory.

After St. Joe's notched the 25-19 win in the opening set, the Beavers led 17-16 in game two before eventually falling by a 25-22 margin. The Monks staved off an UMF rally in the third set to take the game 25-20 for the 3-0 final.

Kristin Palladino '14 (Exeter, N.H.) added seven kills and Kiah Begley '13 (Berwick, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) doled out 27 assists. The Monks amassed 11 total blocks, led by Hawkes and Holly Bannister '14 (Cumberland, Maine) with three apiece.

Shannon Brown (Calais, Maine) and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) each collected five kills for UMF. Marina Tello (San Antonio, Texas) continued her solid play with 13 digs in the loss and Amanda Mullane (Melrose, Mass.) had three solo blocks.

The Monks have now defeated the Beavers in six consecutive meetings dating back to the 2008 campaign. Farmington has not taken a set from St. Joe's since that string started with a 3-2 SJC victory on September 24th, 2008.

Saint Joseph's will host Daniel Webster College on Thursday at 7:00 PM while Maine-Farmington is slated to visit Colby-Sawyer College on Friday for a 7:00 PM start.
