Monks Top Blue Jays & Bengals, Remain Undefeated

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College women's volleyball team improved to 14-0 with victories over University of Saint Joseph (5-6, 1-2 GNAC) and University of Maine-Fort Kent (14-5) at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.

THE LEAD

The Monks began the mixed tri-match with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) triumph over conference-rival University of Saint Joseph. Senior middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) notched one of the most impressive performances of her illustrious career with 15 kills – and no errors – in 20 total attacks to help the Monks improve to 3-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. 

In the nightcap, Saint Joseph's maintained the spotless record with a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-19) win over Maine-Fort Kent as Wachowiak led the way with 20 kills and five solo blocks.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Junior setter Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) tallied 25 assists with four service aces
  • Senior Alli Hollander (Thermal, Calif.), junior Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) and sophomore Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) contributed five kills apiece
  • Junior Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) chipped in with three kills, three aces, three assists and 11 digs
  • Freshman libero Jenelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) added 15 digs
  • Senior Tiffany Mapusaga (Waianae, Haw.) led the Blue Jays with seven kills and added seven digs in the loss.

TEAM TOTALS

Saint Joseph's held large leads in kills (33-11), assists (32-10), aces (11-5) and digs (41-25) in the shutout victory. The Monks also recorded a stellar .353 attack percentage while the Blue Jays posted a negative .044 rate, with 11 kills and 14 errors in 68 chances, in the loss.

Saint Joseph's is now 6-3 all-time versus University of Saint Joseph, a team that tipped the Monks in five sets in Connecticut last fall.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • SJC: Hebert broke the team's four-set assists record with 48 helpers in the 3-1 triumph – the former record (39) was held by Kerri Padgett '04 and Kiah Begley '13
  • SJC: Thompson shattered the Monks' four-set digs record with 41, surpassing the former mark (32) held by Erica Russi '14 and Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.), who added 17 digs in today's win over UMFK
  • SJC: Wachowiak boasted a .462 hitting percentage with 20 kills and just two errors in 39 attacks
  • SJC: Huntley tallied career-highs in kills (15) and attacks (45) while picking up 17 digs
  • SJC: Gosselin added six kills and 13 digs while Copp chipped in with four kills
  • UMFK: Senior outside hitter Hope Grace (Fairfield, Calif.) paced the visitors with 11 kills while cleaning up 12 digs
  • UMFK: Junior setter Selina Castro (Fairfield, Calif.) contributed 26 assists and 20 digs
  • UMFK: Senior libero Tiara Nolen (Merced, Calif.) led the Bengals with 25 digs while freshman Adrianna Gutierrez (Lindsay, Calif.) added 17 digs and three aces

TEAM TOTALS

The Monks posted advantages in kills (49-29), assists (49-28), digs (110-102) and blocks (7-1) in the triumph and broke the program's four-set digs record (102, 9/17/11 vs. Mount Ida).

St. Joe's registered a .156 attack rate while Fort Kent checked in with a negative .006 hitting percentage in the nightcap.

The Bengals held a 10-3 lead in service aces in a losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Saint Joseph's is now 8-1 all-time versus University of Maine-Fort Kent, a team that edged the Monks in five sets at the Alfond Center in the last meeting between the programs on October 13th, 2014.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will travel to Bangor, Maine on Tuesday for a 7:00 PM match versus in-state rival Husson University (6-12, 0-0 NAC). The Eagles dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, falling to Rhode Island College and Plymouth State University by identical 3-0 scores. Both matches were played in Plymouth, N.H.
