Saint Joseph's Defeats Albertus Magnus & Anna Maria

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (17-1, 5-0 GNAC) swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball tri-match held at Albertus Magnus College on Saturday afternoon. The Monks opened the day with a 3-0 (25-9,25-7,25-5) win over the host-Falcons (2-10, 0-3 GNAC) and completed the sweep with a 3-1 (22-25,25-21,25-21,25-17) triumph over Anna Maria College (9-9, 2-1 GNAC).

THE LEAD

After suffering their first loss – a 3-2 setback at the hands of WPI last night – the Monks returned to form with a pair of convincing conference victories. Junior Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) produced a career-high 17 kills with a .455 attack rate in the victory over Albertus while senior Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) notched 19 kills and a .390 success rate in the four-set triumph over Anna Maria.

NOTABLES – vs. Albertus Magnus

  • Wachowiak belted 10 kills and now has delivered double-digit kill totals in each of the last six matches and 12 of 18 overall this fall
  • Junior setter Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) dealt 33 assists
  • Freshman libero Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) added 16 digs
  • Senior Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) tallied four aces and six digs

NOTABLES – vs. Anna Maria

  • Huntley registered six kills with nine digs
  • Junior Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) contributed six kills and seven digs
  • Senior Alli Hollander (Thermal, Calif.) added five kills
  • Hebert netted 35 assists with four digs
  • Sophomore Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) chipped in five kills
  • Thompson posted a match-high 19 digs

TEAM TOTALS – vs. Albertus Magnus

Saint Joseph's held sizeable leads in kills (37-11), assists (35-11), service aces (11-2) and digs (46-36) in the win over Albertus Magnus. The Monks registered an outstanding .407 attack percentage while the Falcons countered with a negative .027 mark, posting more errors (13) than kills in the loss.

TEAM TOTALS – vs. Anna Maria

Despite the loss, the AMCATS led in virtually every statistical category in the nightcap, including kills (47-44), assists (47-35), aces (9-5) and digs (66-51). Anna Maria was not able to overcome a total of 47 unforced errors – including 13 service miscues – in the four-set loss. St. Joe's played relatively clean volleyball, making 36 errors – with nine reception mistakes – in the triumph.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victories, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-1 all-time versus Albertus Magnus and is now 8-0 in the history of the series with Anna Maria.

The Monks have swept the Falcons in eight-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2008 season and have dropped just two sets in five meetings with the AMCATS, who entered the GNAC in 2011.

The Monks are off until Thursday when the team hosts in-state rival University of Southern Maine (8-10, 1-1 LEC) in a 7:00 PM start. St. Joe's is 15-14 in the history of the series with USM and tipped the Huskies, 3-2, in Gorham earlier this season.
