Women Participate in 2015 State of Maine Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College women's cross country team placed ninth with 257 points in the State of Maine Championship, hosted by Bowdoin College, on Saturday.

A trio of freshmen led the way for the Monks, as Sarah Curtin (Strafford, N.H.) finished 86th with a 21:50 effort, Lauren Lecompte (Lewiston, Maine) was 89th with a 21:53 time and Maureen Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) placed 91st out of 174 runners with a 21:55 performance. Junior Kristina Schelling (Pelham, N.H.) was 129th (23:48), junior Marisa Lundy (Merrimac, Mass.) finished 151st (25:16), junior Megan McLaughlin (Kingston, N.H.) placed 167th (28:25) and junior Meghan Fullarton (Windham, Maine) was 174th (31:45).

With three of the top five finishers and all five scorers in the first 15 overall, Colby College claimed the State Championship with 37 points. Bowdoin College and Bates College both totaled 55 points with the former winning the tiebreaker, as the Polar Bears' top three runners all finished ahead of the Bobcats' counterparts.

For Colby, the women's crown is the program's ninth in the last 13 years.

University of New England (77 points), Southern Maine (151), Maine-Farmington (186), Husson University (237), Maine Maritime (247), Thomas College (304) and Maine-Presque Isle (325) also participated in the 2015 State Championship.

Colby's Alanna McDonough claimed top individual honors for the second-consecutive season with an 18:17 effort and is just the third women's runner to win the state meet more than once in the last 13 years. Bowdoin's Sarah Kelley was second (18:24), Colby's Caitlin Lawlor placed third (18:25), UNE's Tiana Thomas finished fourth (18:35), and Colby's Taylor Kennedy toured the 5K course in 18:36 to round out the top five finishers.

Saint Joseph's is off until October 31st, when the Monks host the 2015 GNAC Championship on the SJC Campus.
