2023 SJC Athletics Senior Celebration

2023 SJC Athletics Senior Celebration

STANDISH, Maine - The 2023 Saint Joseph's College Athletics Senior Awards have been announced.

At the conclusion of each academic year, the Saint Joseph's Department of Athletics comes together to honor the numerous accomplishments achieved by the graduating class and, following an internal nomination and voting process, bestow awards upon deserving individuals for seven distinguished honors: Female Athlete of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year, Father John Tokaz Award, Neile Nelson Award, Chris Kiernan Award, Male Student-Athlete of the Year, and Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Neile (Joler) Nelson was in attendance to help present her namesake award to the 2023 recipient.

The Saint Joseph's Senior Athletic Celebration was hosted at the Stone Barn on campus and catered by the SJC events department on the evening of Monday, May 8th. Grad student Troy Hendricks (Hiram, Maine) served as the emcee while Chief Athletics & Recreation Officer Will Rothermel and College President Jim Dlugos delivered opening remarks. Senior women's basketball player Katie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine) offered the prayer of invocation.

The College inducted 23 senior athletes into the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society during the evening's festivities. In order to be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student-athlete must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA, NAIA, USCAA or NCCAA. The honoree must also participate in a sport at the varsity intercollegiate level, display strong moral character, achieve senior academic standing - as determined by the certifying institution - and hold a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).

SJC Strength & Conditioning Head Coach Jameson Collins also announced that five Saint Joseph's College student-athletes were selected as 2023 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American Athlete Award recipients.

Special thanks to: Neile (Joler) Nelson, David Bates Photography, the SJC Events Department, SJC Information Technology, and student assistants Kyle McKay and Emily Sawyer.

2023 AWARD RECIPIENTS:

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: OLIVIA HOWE, SOFTBALL

Howe, the first player in SJC softball history to be selected as the GNAC Player of the Year, hit .463 (56-121) with 22 runs, 11 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 25 RBI while starting all 39 of the Monks' games this spring. She capped her senior season ranked second in the conference in slugging percentage (.661), third in batting average and OBP (.507), and fourth in hits (56) and total bases (80). Her 2023 batting average ranks as the fourth highest in program history while her .507 is tied for ninth all time at Saint Joseph's.

For her career, Howe hit .415 (122-294) with 54 runs, 25 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 56 RBI in two full seasons and a pair of pandemic-shortened campaigns (99 games). She leaves the program ranked fourth in career batting average and OBP (.481) and fifth in slugging percentage (.561).

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: TREVOR FLANAGAN, GOLF

Flanagan helped guide the Monks to consecutive GNAC Championships (2021, 2022) and subsequent NCAA DIII National Championship appearances while claiming five Medalist honors and garnering a total of seven GNAC weekly accolades during his career. As a senior, the team captain claimed four Medalist titles, was picked as the conference golfer of the week three times, claimed All-Conference honors, and posted the fifth-best round average (75.2) in program history. Flanagan also recorded the first hole-in-one during competition in program history at the USM Fall Classic.

Head Coach Jason Riley: "It's no surprise that our program has seen success in the last few years with athletes like Trevor leading the way. We'll miss him next year, but we look forward to seeing what he will accomplish in the medical world."

FATHER JOHN TOKAZ AWARD: MARY CASEY & LISA RODRIGUE - CAMPUS SERVICES

Named for a great man who was the College Chaplain for nine years and was an ardent supporter of athletics during his time at Saint Joseph's, this honor is presented annually to the individual within the college community who has displayed extraordinary support of and assistance to the athletic department mission and to our student-athletes.

Corey McCarthy: "Whenever I hear the word "community" on our campus, Lisa Rodrigue and Mary Casey are the first two people I always think of. Lisa and Mary never fail to walk into Alfond Center without a friendly "hello" and a smile on their face - rain, snow, or shine! They are the glue that holds it all together on our campus and always have a positive attitude while assisting us with all of our needs, from mailing and delivering all of our packages, to printing posters, postcards, certificates, and everything in between. They help throw impromptu birthday parties and join in celebrating the accomplishments of our athletes and coaches. When we suffer the loss of a loved one or have a family member with an illness, they bring the community together to let you know we have their support."

Megan Dunlap: "They help brighten everyone's day with the decorations in the mailroom and on their mail cart each season (and to embarrass Kareem of course). We hope presenting this award to these two outstanding SJC community members will help show our appreciation for everything they do."

CHRIS KIERNAN AWARD: JACKSON STANTON, BASEBALL

The Chris Kiernan Award is named after the college's first Director of Athletics and men's basketball coach who later also served as the Dean of Students and the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. This award is presented to the student-athlete who has shown a consistent work ethic to develop as both a student and an athlete; who has displayed a strong commitment toward service of team and community and has proven a never quit attitude and the willingness to work through and overcome adversity.

Head Coach Will Sanborn

"Jackson Stanton is a strong leader for our baseball team and on our campus. In the summer of 2021 Jackson suffered hyperthyroidism and lost a tremendous amount of weight. I didn't recognize him when he came back to campus in the fall. He quietly fought his way back from that and has become one of our top players this year. A team captain this year, Jackson takes his leadership training very seriously with our Leadership Academy, has served on SAAC, and is a real leader in our program and on campus."

NEILE NELSON AWARD: JONATHAN DUBE, BASEBALL

Presented annually to the student-athlete who has set an example by displaying a high level of commitment to his/her team while performing a leadership role within the Saint Joseph's College campus community. Neile was a standout two-sport athlete (soccer, basketball) at Saint Joseph's and garnered 1994 NCAA Maine Woman of the Year and Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades in 1993 and 1994, All-Northeast acclaim in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and All-Conference mention in each of her four years on the soccer field.

Head Coach Will Sanborn:

"Jon Dube is a key leader of our baseball team and on campus. Jon is an RA, serves in our Admissions Office and is one of our team captains. Jon is constantly busy helping to make our campus a better place. His positive attitude is infectious, and he embodies the commitment and leadership qualities that Neile Nelson demonstrated."

MALE STUDENT-ATHLETE: DEVIN ABBOTT, CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK & FIELD

Chosen by a selection committee, with criteria based on both academic and athletic achievement, within the department.

Tom Dann: "Devin has been a member of the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field teams for all four years. He has worked incredibly hard to contribute to the success of the teams each and every season. Last spring, he had a breakout season, improving significantly and hasn't looked back. This past fall, Devin was the runner-up in the GNAC cross country championships and also finished in the runner-up position in the indoor mile, 3000 meter, and 5000 meter events. Not only has he made a huge impact on the team, but he also has been captain for the past two years and has been an outstanding leader."

Bill Cosentino: "His dedication to SJC athletics never waivers. He played an important role within our sports information office, was a student assistant coach for men's basketball, and was a three-year participant of the Monks Leadership Academy. He holds a 3.94 GPA."

FEMALE STUDENT-ATHLETE: MOLLY McCLUSKEY, FIELD HOCKEY

Chosen by a selection committee, with criteria based on both academic and athletic achievement, within the department.

Rupert Lewis: "Molly is a very dedicated and committed leader and captain for the field hockey program. As a Nursing major, she posted a cumulative 3.97 GPA and earned NFHCA Division III Scholar of Distinction honors all four years and is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma. The three-time GNAC All-Academic selection earned Second Team All-Conference honors last fall after scoring 23 total points while starting all 20 of our games."
