Saint Joseph's Edges Endicott, 1-0

BEVERLY, Mass. – Junior pitchers Matt Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) and Devan Harrison (Bourne, Mass.) combined to toss a five-hit shutout and lift Saint Joseph's College (4-7) past Endicott College (0-1) in a non-conference baseball matchup on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The lone run of the game was scored in the top of the fifth, when sophomore Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) led off with a single and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior center fielder Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine). Prior to the sac fly, Stanton moved to second on a Zach Miles (Concord, N.H.) base hit and advanced to third on a sac bunt from junior third baseman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.).

The Gulls threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth when J.P. Catellier (Springfield, Mass.) attempted to score from second on a John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.) double to right field, but Miles delivered a strike to home on a relay throw from Kevin Aylward (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to cut down the runner at the plate.

Endicott also had the bases loaded with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Harrison came out of the bullpen to strike out Joseph Millar (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) and cease the threat.

ON THE MOUND:

  • Bergeron picked up the victory after allowing two hits and four walks with one strikeout over 6.2 innings
  • Harrison earned the first save of his career after yielding three hits with a pair of K's in 2.1 frames of relief
  • The Gulls featured eight different pitchers in what was their 2021 season-opener; freshman Nicholas Cannata (Marlborough, Conn.) suffered the setback after allowing a run off two hits in an inning of work

OFF THE BAT:

  • Miles was 1-3 with a stolen base
  • Stanton went 1-4 with a run scored
  • For Endicott, Mulready was 2-4 with a double

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 19-8 all-time versus Endicott College. The Monks have defeated the Gulls in three-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2019 campaign.
