Monks Take Two from Chargers, 9-4 & 7-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Saint Joseph's College (16-10, 9-1 GNAC) won a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball games at Colby-Sawyer College (6-18, 3-7 GNAC) on Monday afternoon. The Monks opened with a 9-4 victory and capped the road trip with a 7-1 triumph.

GAME ONE:

The Monks doubled their production in each of the first three frames, with a run on a Drew Healey (Rochester, N.H.) single in the first, two runs off three hits in the second, and four runs on four knocks in the fourth to stake a 7-1 advantage.

St. Joe's added two runs in the fifth when senior Ryan Tessier (Concord, N.H.) registered a sac fly and Healey knocked in his second RBI with a single.

The Chargers managed to score a run in the sixth and two in the seventh but failed to mount a serious threat in the opening setback.

ON THE MOUND:

  • Senior starter Matthew Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) improved to 3-2 on the season after giving up two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in six innings; senior Johnny Flynn (Holden, Mass.) allowed two runs with a pair of punch-outs in an inning of relief
  • Colby-Sawyer starter Zach Rogers falls to 1-4 after yielding seven runs (two earned) on eight hits with five K's in four innings while reliever Josh Finkle allowed two runs off four hits with a pair of strikeouts over three frames

OFF THE BAT:

  • Freshman second baseman Michael Wearne (Ellington, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, a stolen base, and an RBI
  • Grad student Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) was 1-for-3 with two runs, a triple, and an RBI
  • Healey was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Tessier notched a pair of RBI
  • For Colby-Sawyer, Jake Choiniere and Jack Matarese produced two hits apiece

GAME TWO:

The Monks kicked off the scoring in the top of the second with RBI singles from Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) and Zach Miles (Concord, N.H.) and jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the third when Matt Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) posted a sac fly and Gravel doubled home Healey.

The Chargers produced their only run of the closing contest in the bottom of the third when Dryden Eliason crossed home plate on a Tommy Sasso sac fly.

St. Joe's responded with two runs in the fourth when Tessier and Healey rapped RBI doubles and tacked on the game's final run in the fifth when Gravel walked, stole second and third, and scored on a Stanton base hit.

ON THE MOUND:

  • Senior starter Matt Poff (Pelham, N.H.) remained undefeated (4-0) after tossing five one-hit innings while allowing an unearned run and fanning five batters; relievers Sean McDonough (Concord, N.H.) and Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) combined to give up two hits while striking out four in two innings of work
  • Colby-Sawyer starter Jack Mullen falls to 3-3 after allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings; relievers Erik Rohs, Jackson Parmentier and Cross Sierra closed out the game with a solid collective effort

OFF THE BAT:

  • Healey was 2-for-2 with a run, a double and an RBI
  • Miles went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI
  • Stanton was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the sweep Saint Joseph's improves to 4-0 al-time versus Colby-Sawyer College.

Saint Joseph's will host Bowdoin College on Wednesday in a single non-conference game starting at 7:00 PM.
