MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College suffered a pair of losses at the hands of Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball action on Saturday afternoon. The AMCATS opened with an 8-2 victory and completes the sweep with an 11-8 triumph.
GAME ONE:
The Monks were held to just three hits in the opener, one being a solo home run off the bat of senior catcher Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) in the top of the sixth, but the game stood at a 1-1 stalemate until the bottom of the fifth, when Anna Maria plated six runs off six hits to essentially clinch the victory.
SJC graduate starter Matthew Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with four K's over 4.1 innings. Freshman Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, N.H.) gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout in 0.2 innings and first-year Dylan Brander (Merrimack, N.H.) allowed an unearned run and two hits in an inning of work.
Anna Maria starter Nick Choate earned the victory after giving up a run off two hits and four walks with six K's in five innings. Jack Marzec closed out the victory while allowing one run – the Stanton longball - with three strikeouts over two frames.
Anna Maria right fielder Jarrod Marifiote led the AMCATS' 12-hit attack by going 4-4 with a run, two doubles, and a pair of RBI.
GAME TWO:
The AMCATS raced out to an 11-2 lead through five innings in the nightcap, but the Monks fought back into the game with six runs – all with two out - off seven hits in the top of the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Saint Joseph's left the bases loaded in the frame and failed to mount another scoring threat in the three-run loss.
St. Joe's senior starter Samuel Jalbert (Mascouche, Que.) falls to 1-2 on the season after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Hugh Barrett (Durham, Conn.), Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.), Shea Caton (Bristol, R.I.), Ben Fargo (Charlestown, R.I.), and Brander all threw in relief in the setback.
Anna Maria starter Anthony Pingeton improved to 5-1 after giving up six runs on nine hits and two walks with three K's in 5.2 innings. Marzec allowed two runs off four hits and a walk in 0.1 innings and Michael Shorey picked up a save after allowing two hits and fanning a pair over three shutout innings.
The Monks pounded out 15 hits but stranded 13 runners in the setback. Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.), Jack Moltenbrey (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Jonathan Dube (Rochester, N.H.), Michael Wearne (Ellington, Conn.), and Stanton registered two hits apiece in the nightcap.
Anna Maria shortstop Kosta Drosidis went 2-3 with two runs, a pair of doubles, and an RBI and third baseman David Doherty was 2-3 with a run and three RBI in the closing contest.
