STANDISH,
MAINE - Saint Joseph's College dropped their
season opener, 2-1, to visiting University of New England. The
Nor'Easters went up 1-0 on a goal by first year Jillian Croteau
(Templeton, MA). Croteau deflected a hard shot by sophomore Amy
Williams (Bridgewater, NH) into the back of the net.
St. Joe's came on strong during the last three minutes of the half
as sophomore Darcy Ward (Dresden, ME) keyed
several attacks. All three of St. Joe's first half penalty corners
came in the final minute of the half, but they were unable to
capitalize. UNE held an 11-1 first half advantage in shots.
In the second half, the Nor'Easters added a goal at 58:51 as sophomore Lisa Baillargeon (Berlin, NH) scored off a pass from sophomore Sarah Goudreau (Dexter, ME). St. Joe's out shot UNE 15-4 and led 11-1 in penalty corners, but was held scoreless until the final three minutes of the game when junior Monique Crawford (Peru, ME) scored with 2:39 to go to make it 2-1.
Junior Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) along with first years Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) and Gina Gaetani (Auburn, ME) turned in strong performances.
First year goal keeper Ellen Gagne
(Northborough, MA) had 7 saves for St. Joe's and junior Krystal
Wysocki (Old Saybrook, CT) recorded 5 for UNE.
St. Joe's returns to action on Friday 9/9 for a 4:30 PM game at
Maine-Farmington.
