Nowell Lifts Monks Past Falcons, 4-1

STANDISH, ME - Sophomore Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, ME) netted a pair of goals and freshman goalkeeper Meaghan Johnson (Portland, ME) made four saves to help Saint Joseph's (3-1) defeat Fitchburg State College (2-2), 4-1, on Thursday afternoon at Lakeside Field. Junior Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) added a goal and an assist and freshman Amanda Sebastiao (Uxbridge, MA) scored her first collegiate goal in the victory.

Nowell scored her first goal of the contest at the 19:24 mark off passes from Ostrowski and Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME). The sophmore tallied her second goal two minutes later, with assists going to Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) and Kimball, to provide the Royal Blue with a 2-0 lead.

Falcons senior Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, MA) scored her second goal of the season in the 29th minute of the contest off a pass from Kaylee Bergeron '12 (Acushnet, MA) to lessen the SJC lead to 2-1, but Ostrowski recorded her seventh goal of the year five minutes later, with the assist going to Dunn, to put the Lady Monks back up by two (3-1). Sebastiao capped the game scoring at the end of the first half to provide St. Joe's with a 4-1 lead.

Taylor Van Ahnen '11 (Seekonk, MA) made eight saves for the Falcons in the losing effort.

The Lady Monks held a 13-5 advantage in shots and an 18-9 edge in penalty corners in the match-up.

Saint Joseph's will travel to Waterville, ME on Saturday, September 20th to play NAC rival Thomas College at 11:00 AM while Fitchburg State will host Worcester State College at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
