Huskies Top Monks, 3-1

STANDISH, Maine – University of Southern Maine (4-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (5-2), 3-1, in a non-conference field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

USM applied all the offensive pressure early and hit pay dirt when sophomore Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) scored on a tipped shot from Mary Keef (Westbrook, Maine) in the seventh minute.

Junior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine) doubled the visitors' lead with a goal off a perfect crossing pass in the crease from Keef just 31 seconds into the third quarter.

The Huskies capped their side of the scoring ledger with 28 seconds left in the penultimate period, when sophomore Adelle Surette (Sabattus, Maine) steered a shot to the top left corner of the cage off a Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine) feed.

The Monks finally found the scoreboard at the 52:45 mark when freshman Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) netted her fifth goal of the season on a fast break.

TEAM STATS:

Southern Maine held the lead in shots (18-15) and shots on goal (14-4) while Saint Joseph's posted an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC sophomore goalie Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine) turned away 11 shots in the setback while USM senior netminder Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) made three saves in the winning performance.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 9-14 all-time versus the University of Southern Maine.

Saint Joseph's will play at Elms College on Friday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest set to start at 4:00 PM.
