Wildcats Surge Past Monks, 3-1

STANDISH, Maine – Johnson & Wales University (9-0, 4-0 GNAC) scored three unanswered goals to defeat Saint Joseph's College (7-4, 4-1 GNAC), 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior Aimee Adams (Gardiner, Maine) lifted the Monks to an early lead with a goal off a rebound at the 10:39 mark and the slim margin held true until the 26th minute, when JWU grad student Jillian Miele (Wilmington, Mass.) scored on a penalty corner off a Kaitlyn Freeman (Stafford, Va.) assist.

The Wildcats scored the go-ahead goal just 30 seconds into the third quarter when Miele netted her 11th marker of the season on a fast break play. Freshman Zofia Bangs (Stoughton, Mass.) iced the game with her fifth goal of the year off a Margaret Johnson (Bear, Del.) pass in the 57th minute.

TEAM STATS:

Johnson & Wales held the lead in shots (14-8), shots on goal (14-5), and penalty corners (4-3) in the winning effort.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC sophomore Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine) made nine saves in the setback while JWU senior Madison Flaxington (Lincoln, R.I.) posted four stops on the afternoon. Freshman Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) and senior Molly McCluskey (Orono, Maine) notched defensive saves in the losing bid.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's falls to 6-4 all-time versus Johnson & Wales University and has dropped three-consecutive games to the Wildcats, a streak that began in 2019.

Saint Joseph's will play at Simmons University on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
