Waryas Hat Trick Propels Monks Past Blue Jays, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) netted all three of the Monks' goals to lift Saint Joseph's College (10-6, 7-2 GNAC) past University of Saint Joseph (1-12, 1-7 GNAC), 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After over 11 minutes of mostly midfield play, the Blue Jays managed to score the game's first goal on the first shot taken by either team when Emma Kociszewski hit pay dirt off a Devan Fox pass in the 12th minute.

Waryas put the tying goal on the board with her 13th tally of the season off a Megan Quirion (Oakland, Maine) assist at the 22:17 mark. The 1-1 stalemate held true until the 37th minute, when Waryas slammed home a rebound for her second strike of the game and, ultimately, her fifth game-winner of the year.

With 24 seconds left, Waryas iced the conference contest and capped the hat trick performance with her 15th goal of the year off an Abbie Jacques (Mount Vernon, Maine) dish.

Saint Joseph's held considerable advantages in shots (22-3), shots on goal (14-3), and penalty corners (14-2) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:
