Monks Fall to Huskies, 2-0

GORHAM, Maine – University of Southern Maine (2-1) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-3), 2-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 50th minute and the Huskies added an insurance goal in the 55th minute when freshman Haley-Jane Tuplin (Lisbon, Maine) scored off a corner for the 2-0 final.

TEAM STATS:

Southern Maine held the advantage in shots (31-9), shots on goal (23-5), and penalty corners (24-11) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Kassidy Collins (Pittston, Maine) turned in a stellar performance with 18 saves and was aided by a pair of Hannah Michael (Hampton Falls, N.H.) defensive saves and another stop by freshman Haley Brooks (Ossipee, N.H.).

USM netminder Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) earned her first shutout of the 2023 season, making five saves, including a pair of stick saves in the fourth quarter on shots by Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) and Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine).

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's game marked the 26th meeting between the Huskies and the Monks.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 18-8.

Saint Joseph's opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday with an 11:00 AM home game versus University of Saint Joseph.
