Saint Joseph's Picked to Win GNAC Championship

Saint Joseph's Picked to Win GNAC Championship

WINTHROP, Mass. - Following a vote by the league's head coaches, Saint Joseph's College of Maine and defending champion Albertus Magnus College have been selected atop the annual Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Golf Pre-Championship Poll ahead of next week's two-day, 36-hole tournament.

The annual tournament will take place Monday-Tuesday, October 11-12 at the prestigious New Haven Country Club in Hamden, Conn, as the Monks received 23 points overall and three-first place votes, just two points ahead of Albertus Magnus, which took home 21 points.

Dean College finished third in the poll with 14 points, while newest GNAC core member Elms College had 11 points, and Emmanuel College registered six points in the rankings.

Albertus will be anchored by last year's GNAC Championship individual medalist Ryan Sember, while Trevor Flanagan and Drew Mathieu will look to lead the way for Saint Joseph's of Maine, which last won the GNAC Championship in 2016.

The GNAC was thrilled to be able to host a championship last spring after not being able to sponsor the tournament in Fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as four programs teed off from Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy, Mass. late in April for an 18-hole championship. Albertus came away with the victory with a team score of 320, which was 23 strokes ahead of runner-up Saint Joseph's.

Next week's winner will receive the GNAC's automatic berth to the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships next spring.
